Obituary of Edna Davis Lewis
Edna D. Lewis, 108 years old, of Sylva went to be with her Lord, Friday evening, January 6, 2012. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Davis and Mabel Stillwell. She was the oldest member of Webster Baptist Church, having been a member for 96 years, and the pianist for over 50 years. She received her education from Meredith College and Western Carolina University and was WCU's oldest living alumni. She was a teacher in the Jackson County School System. She was past president of the following organizations: Parent-Teacher Association, Home Demonstration Club, and The Sylva Garden Club. She was treasurer and caretaker of the Stillwell Cemetery for many years, establishing a trust fund for the cemetery during this time and remained its custodian until her death.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her son, T.C. Lewis; her brother, Robert L. Davis; a sister, Thelma Sutton, a grandson, Michael Lewis, and her granddaughter, Wanda B. Morris.
She is survived by a son, Duane (Bonnie) Lewis of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Carolyn L. Buchanan of Sylva; and her beloved toy poodle, Ellie. She had six grandchildren: Dan, Troy, and Kevin Lewis, Diane (Keith) Herndon, Tim (Margie) Lewis, and Sandra(Wayne) Muller; and two great grandchildren, Cory and Cody Lewis.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, January 9, 2012 at Webster Baptist Church with Revs. David Powell and Scott Carter officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:00 prior to the service at the Church. Burial will be in Stillwell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stillwell Cemetery in care of Carolyn Buchanan, 25 Monroe Buchanan Road, Sylva, NC.
