Well now I have to put on some George Jones and sing it loud and proud to my wife and carry on a tradition. The Wilkes always welcomed me in their home and Johnny will always be in my thoughts. From Coach, Teacher, To friend, when I think of him it always makes me smile.

I am sorry for your loss. May you each find comfort in your fond memories, and in knowing God "is close to the brokenhearted". (Psalm 34:18)
Our loving Creator has promised that he will soon "swallow up death forever" and "wipe away the tears from all faces". (Isaiah 25:8)

Coach Wike was my Golf Instructor at WCU in the Spring 1986.I'll always remember his come-go-easy style of teaching us golf. I remember how exited he and our class were after Nicklaus made that amazing comeback to win his final Masters . Now Coach can play golf in a better place. RIP Coach John Wike.

My deepest condolences. Coach taught me a great deal about football (1969-1972) but far more how to approach life. He never changed and will always remember his smile. I also remember how great he was at golf and how he won the KA High Hampton Open with a broom stick for a shaft in his putter. He will always be in my thoughts. May God bless the entire family.

As long as there is a Western Carolina there will be a Johnny Wike footprint. He will be remembered by generations of players and coaches for his wit, wisdom, and dry sense of humor. His impact goes beyond measure. To his players he was a great teacher and a quiet port in the storm of college football. To his fellow coaches he was a man who always had your back and gave you great football advice without you even knowing that it was advice. If he said to me, "Did I miss a meeting" that meant we were trying to do something that was too complicated for the players. If he saw a big list of defensive calls on the board, he would say, "when you gonna call it", that meant if you didn't have a specific situation, down and distance, etc. for that call then "we didn't need that". Johnny was a great coach and a great role model for what coaching is really about. There are many, many Johnny Wike stories and lessons embedded in my soul. My sincere condolences to Carolyn, Matt, and Eric and also to his many many players and peers who have been fortunate enough to stand in his shadow. Heaven now has another Catamount. Coach Wike was a passionate man who deeply loved coaching, the kids he coached and WCU. He provided me with the opportunity to play collegiate golf and resurrected my love for the game of golf. I wish I could have made it down for the service this evening but know my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. He will be deeply missed but the footprint he left has forever changed the course of WCU athletics and the individuals he coached.

I have known Coach Johhny Wike since I was a high school student at the old Elon College HS in Elon. When I wemt to WCU Coach Wike soon followed. He was followed by one of my old weight lifting friends Cameron Little who played for him at Elon. After I graduated from WDU and began my coaching career (I am still coaching HS FB at Eastern Guilford HS in Gibsonville, NC. This is my 49th year) I would see him at clinics and it was always great to see him. I even saw him when I would return to the Purple & Gold Reunions. He was an asset and inspiration to all who ever knew him. We are better people because of him. He will be missed but he will always be remembered.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family. All of you will be in my prayers during this season and the seasons ahead. Coach Wike's sphere of influence was very wide and large, as that sphere reached from Western NC, Eastern NC, and points in between. Western Carolina athletics owe him a debt of gratitude that can never be re-paid. His legacy will long live in the hearts of Catamounts across America.

As a young, inexperienced African-American Graduate Assistant at WCU in 1991, Coach Johnny Wike inspired and motivated me to always do my best and treat people with a kindness and concern for them as human beings. I will always remember how he made time for the important things, like his daily walk with his dog Bo. Coach Wike has taught me how to slow down and love life. Thanks Coach.
