Hi Angie, so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Randy had kept me informed of his status at the nursing home. I will certainly remember our fun times playing handball, and his help getting the annual Mountain Classic Handball Tourney started some 20 years ago. He said we needed a fancy name for the tournament and came up with our tourney name. I hope you are well. Thanks, CW

Angela and family,
We were so sorry to hear of Doug's death. He left a true legacy to WCU and will always be remembered as the person who represented Mountain Heritage Day. When we moved to Western, he was Dean of Men. My sister Lucille Neilson knew him in high school in Asheville. She is also 92. I will share with her the news of his death. We send our condolences to all of you. His smiling face and friendly manner will surely be missed by us and all who knew him.

I started work at WCU in 1981 in the Mail Dept. and I got to see Doug very often. He was one of my very favorite people there. Always cheerful and extremely friendly to everyone. I had a habit of telling people that he was one of the few at Western who never acted like they had a PHD in front of their name. I somehow suspect that he was a bit mischievous when he was younger, because he always had a certain twinkle in his eye that made you think that he might be up to something. And I mean that in the most heartfelt compliment. I consider it an honor to have known Doug and my thoughts and prayers go out the family.
