Mamie Henry

Obituary of Mamie Sue Henry

Mamie Sue Henry, of Anderson, SC, died May 28, 2017. Mamie was born to the late Spon and Kate Mills on October 3, 1927, in Marion, NC. She was raised in Sylva, NC, and married the late William Henry on September 28, 1952. They lived in Flat Rock, MI, before returning to Sylva in 1975. Mamie was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Sylva. She is survived by her two sons, Ken Henry (Jo) of Gastonia, NC, and Keith Henry (Deborah) of Anderson, SC; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Mamie was a very strong, independent, hard working woman with an extremely generous heart. She loved the Lord and was very active in her local church. Second only to her love for the Lord was her deep love for her family, which started at an early age. After completing the 8th grade, she began working full time and used her first paycheck to purchase a kitchen sink for her mother. She also enjoyed feeding her family and was a tremendous Southern cook. Her biscuits will never be surpassed. She canned vegetables from their garden, providing tomatoes and corn year round. She enjoyed walking and working in her flower gardens. She could identify most all flowers and with her green thumb could transplant anything. Mamie was a staunch Republican and enjoyed involvement at the local level. She always put her family ahead of herself but occasionally allowed them to treat her to her favorites- a McDonald's cheeseburger or Pizza Hut pizza. The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 2:00 at Appalachian Funeral Home in Sylva. The family will receive friends prior to the service, and burial will follow at the Henry-Cogdill graveyard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 1883 Dark Ridge Road, Sylva NC, 28779.
