Obituary of Herman Lieberman

Cullowhee – Herman Lieberman of Cullowhee passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at his home, surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones. A native of New York City, Herman had been a Cullowhee resident since 1975.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Lieberman, his mother Rose Lieberman, and his sister, Norma Waldman. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 54 years, Eleanor Lieberman; daughters Julie Lieberman Barbee and Jill Lieberman; son-in-law Chip Barbee; grandchildren, David and Sam Barbee; dearly loved neighbor of 42 years, Jim Hamilton; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Known affectionately as “Herm” or “The Worm,” Herman was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.  For many years he was an avid tennis player, swimmer, and enthusiastic sports fan, particularly when it came to Catamount football. He had a beloved group of poker buddies that he played with regularly for 40+ years, originally at 9 p.m. and then at noon as they all grew older. As anyone that knew him well could tell you, Herman was obsessive about maintaining his lawn, and his family told him jokingly that’s where they’d spread his ashes.

He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
