Larry, a resident of Lakeside, was born on November 18, 1948, in Waynesville, North Carolina, the son of Asbury and Ila Beasley Shuler. Larry was a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School in Sylva, North Carolina, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary with a degree in Pastoral Ministries. Known to most as "Brother Larry," he served in church ministries from 1982 until his passing, beginning at First Baptist Church of Garrison and concluding his career with 29 years of ministry at First Baptist Church Lakeside. An avid hobbyist, Larry was the founder, CEO, sole proprietor and operator of Larry's Jalopy Rejuvenation Emporium, using his skill as an auto mechanic to care for the cars of family and friends. He could be seen on Fridays and Saturdays with his beloved basset hounds frequenting the local garage sales, where he regularly added to his collections of jack hammers, iPods, opalescent hobnail, etc. A lifelong passion of Larry's was southern gospel music, and he was a founding member of the Laymen Quartet, producing four records and touring extensively throughout the eastern U.S. A willing companion to any destination, Larry was eager to travel whether on a mission trip, family ski trip, or road-tripping with his "Happy Traveler," his loving wife, Rita. His family will lovingly remember all of his "Larry-isms," such as "Oh, Law," "Just had a bar of soap," and "People are crazier than anybody!" Above all, Larry's life was marked by his service to his Lord, his family, and his church, which he displayed through his deep love for people and his burden for sharing the message of his Savior. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Asbury and Ila Shuler, brother, Charles Robert Shuler, and his lifelong friend, Eddie Trull. The family would like to recognize the outstanding care provided by Dr. Qasim Nayeem, Dr. Jay Patel, and Dr. Jerry Barker. The family would also like to thank the church family of First Baptist Church Lakeside for their love and care. Survivors: Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Rita; their children, Keri (John) Pribble, Brady, and Micah (Kristen); his brother Marvin (Judy); and a number of nieces and nephews.
