Hey it's Zach, I would like to first apologize to everyone that I didn't come to attend this in person, but I feel so strongly in my heart that I just wouldn't be able to handle it. Papaw was a great man, he taught me many important life lessons, and was there for me even when I didn't deserve it.
I remember mowing yards with him, and him teaching me how to do a job right. If I didn't do it right, he would make me go back and do it again. This lesson has stuck with me and translates into so many other parts of life. I also remember working on cars by his side, and watching Nascar. I would wake up early in the morning to help him make his lunch for work. He taught me how to shoot a gun, how to fish, how to chop wood and make a fire. There is so many things he has done for me, and I will be eternally grateful for the relationship we shared.
Papaw was my rock, my hero, and one of my best friends. I always looked up to him, and wanted to do everything he did.
Papaw, I hope you can understand why I couldn't be here for your funeral. I love you so much, and I can only hope that one day I will be the kind of man that would make you proud. I will never forget you.
Love, the apple of your eye,
Zach

My step-dad died last night (2-18-2018). His name was Charles Allen. He meant a lot to a lot of people. Here are some of the ways he was important to me…
My mother and Charles have been divorced for many years. After the divorce, I was afraid that he wouldn’t want anything to do with me. That was not true. I always felt welcomed by him.
He was the best troubleshooter that I have ever talked to. Not because he knew everything, but because he was honest about what he didn’t know.
In my late teen years, drugs and alcohol were a problem for me. He and my mother kept helping me. Once, in frustration, I asked him when they were going to stop, he said “When we get it right.”
Soon after that, he took me to my first AA meeting. With the exception of one two-year relapse 14 years ago, I have been clean and sober since then.
He loved, and was fiercely protective of his grandson Zachary. He was there for him when I couldn’t be, therefore preserving for me a relationship with my son. This may be the greatest gift he gave me.
I love you Charles.
Love,
Darren
P.S. Just today, when I went out on my porch, I noticed an electrical outlet I needed to fix. The first thing I thought of was calling Charles to see how to go about fixing it. I realized he was gone. It became a little more "real", and I don't want it to be. It has been a rough day. I miss you Charles.

Will always remember Charles laughter and good humor at the store on Saturday mornings. He kept everyone in stitches and always kept the forklift running. He was the true representative of the old "pole yard"!!! He always had a smile and kind word for everyone he saw. Prayers to the entire family. Hoyte,Jr.

Charles was a good man and will be greatly missed. He knew my family long before I was born, but I got to know him when I worked for Dr. Hicks.
He was certainly a good neighbor and friend to all of us that worked there.
He would come over and check on us girls often and would tell us to call if we needed him for anything.
Prayers for the family, may God comfort you in these days of sorrow.

My husband Lloyd and Charles worked together at Eastgate Lanes. I would see Charles at the post office and talk with him on occasions. Charles was a wonderful friend and he and Lloyd were the best. My heart breaks for you all because I know how hard it is to lose both a husband and father. Prayers for all of you.
