Obituary of Delos Dexter Monteith

Delos Dexter Monteith, Jr. of Sylva, North Carolina departed this life on July 9, 2018. He was the son of the late Delos Monteith, Sr. and Louise Gribble Monteith. He is survived by his wife of thirty-three years, Karen Hensley Monteith, one brother, Kevin (Romona) Monteith, also of Sylva, and numerous nieces and nephews, including three great nieces. Delos received a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University and a Masters of Regional Planning degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He retired from Southwestern Community College where he served as the Director of Institutional Research and Planning. Delos was active in a number of civic organizations. In 2010 he was appointed the Jackson County representative to the Western North Carolina Public Lands Council by Governor Beverly Perdue. He was reappointed to this council for a second term by Governor Perdue and served until 2016. In 2015 he was appointed to the Board of the Jackson County Department of Social Services and served as Board Chair from 2016 to 2018. Delos was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hiking and fly fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He also enjoyed his annual elk hunt in the Teton region of Wyoming. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at First Baptist Church of Sylva, North Carolina, of which he was a member. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Jeff Mathis. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Old Field Cemetery in Sylva. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the general fund of the First Baptist Church of Sylva. .
