Obituary of William Thomas Shuler

William T. “Bill” Shuler, age 86, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Skyland Care Center. Mr. Shuler was born August 29, 1931 in Sylva to the late Robert and Alyne Chapman Shuler. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Bryson on May 15, 2011; as well as three brothers; Bob, Jim, and Ronnie. 

Mr. Shuler was blessed with a happy childhood growing up with three brothers and many close cousins, all living in the same community. After graduating from Sylva High School in 1949, Bill was one of thirteen young men from Jackson County to join the U.S. Army. They were hoping to all stay together, but sadly this did not happen. Upon his discharge from the army he worked as a barber with his father in Sylva until he began working with the United States Postal Service where he worked for twenty-six years.

Bill married Clara Bryson in April of 1957. Together they served their church and community the rest of their lives. He was devoted to her care when she became ill and passed on May 15, 2011.

Bill enjoyed many areas of life; hunting, fishing, golf, and woodworking. His life-time friend, Max Blanton was ever present. Bill, Clara, Max and his wife, Ralphine always remained close. Bill was an inspiration and was loved by all who knew him. His immediate family is all deceased. Left to remember him with love are three nieces, Brenda Shuler Crawford (Randy), Glenda Shuler Alexander, and Jan Shuler Plummer; one sister-in-law, Reva Shuler; several special cousins including Ginger Springer Fullbright who was invaluable to Bill’s health. Bill’s in-laws and their families also survive.

The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 27 at Appalachian Funeral Services with the Rev. Kent Loudermilk and Rev. Lloyd Fish officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Addie Cemetery.
