Obituary of Aldine Cash Smith
Aldine Cash Smith 91 of Sylva, NC graduated to Glory Tuesday, June 5 at Harris Regional Hospital. He was born February 15, 1921 in Davie County, NC to the late Della Cash Allen Smith and Charles Lee Smith.
Aldine, known to his friends as Joe and to his family as Tink, spent his youth on two farmsteads that he has fondly remembered his entire life-one in the Fork community of Davie County and the other at "the point" where the Big and Little Yadkin Rivers met. At seventeen he left home to work with the Civilian Conservation Corp where he learned how to drive a truck. After leaving the "CC Camp", he got a job hauling milk for Coble Dairy in Lexington, NC where he met his future wife, Louise Staton Smith. Upon marrying they moved to High Point where he hauled freight for Lewis and Holmes Trucking. A carpenter friend from his church helped him build their house and thus began his second career-construction. He also had the unique privilege of being the builder and contractor for the church he attended, Calvary Church of the Nazarene (now West Fairfield Baptist Church). He retired in 1986 as a building inspector with the City of High Point.
Joe loved the Lord, the church, and its people. He was a faithful member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene for over fifty years and later Lakeview Church of the Nazarene in Waynesville. He served for over twenty-five years as Sunday School Superintendent, and he enthusiastically visited and encouraged people, pointing them to Jesus. He was always upbeat with a big smile on his face.
After his retirement, he and Louise traveled as often as they could throughout the US. After a debilitating stroke, they moved to Sylva, NC to live with a daughter and her husband. His wife Louise passed away in February, 2012 after almost 69 years of marriage.
His greatest joys were talking to people and doing anything outdoors. In his later years in the mountains he would guide his wheelchair to a favorite tree near his house where he watched nature do her thing and where he talked to the Lord at his "praying tree". His friends and family knew they could count on him to be praying for them.
In addition to his wife and his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Robah and Harvey Smith; sisters, Virgie Thompson and Mertie Belle Jones; and grandson Dean Henke.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Smith (R. Paul) of Raleigh and Nikki Henke (Ken) of Sylva; grandsons Len Henke, Patrick and Brandon Smith; great grandsons, Jason and Justin Henke; and great-great grandson Noah Henke.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday June 9, 2012 at West Fairfield Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Pullin officiating. Burial will follow in the Floral Garden Cemetery in High Point. The Family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the church.
