All -
My heart goes out to the Bunn family on this day of tribute and remembrances. My respect goes out to Uncle John and Aunt Lois, who both were instrumental in my life and the life of my family. My prayers go out to David, Steve and Raymond, and their families, whom we all call our "Mountain Cousins" forever. I will always remember Lois for her immense kindness, a trait that served her well all her life.
I recall vividly sitting in Grampa Bunn's study as a small boy, mesmerized while he smoked his cherry tobacco and wrote sermons. I think it was this tug that led me to Wake Forest years later. As a 12 year old, I answered the alter call and was baptized by Uncle John, who happened to be the interim pastor in Goldsboro at the time. A few years before his death, I sat with Lois and Uncle John in their den in Sylva and was treated to John's thoughts on the doctrine of grace - a lively discussion I have never forgotten. I seem to have been instilled by his intellectual curiosity, and sometimes, his delight for life which can never be surpassed.
I will always thank John and Lois for welcoming Grandma Bunn into their home after my mother died in the 1980s I still have three of Grampa Bunn's bibles that Fannie gave me after Grandpa Bunn's passing. I am always so proud when I have an opportunity to tell folks about my Baptist heritage and the lives of my grandfather and uncle. Lois was the consummate first lady, stoic at times yet always gently smiling in any time and place.
What a wonderful legacy that these Bunns have passed on to our lives and generations to come! From the gun shop to Chevys to western novels to simple greetings by family, we have always been blessed by John, Lois and their families.
May God bless.
