Obituary of Eugene Carden Tweedy
Eugene Carden Tweedy, 81, died in his Cullowhee, North Carolina home the early hours of November 4th 2012 after a period of declining health. Mr. Tweedy was born in Rustburg, Virginia to Benjamin and Lillian Tweedy, who along with his sister Betty Vasser, preceded him in death. Mr. Tweedy finished high school in Rustburg and attended Lynchburg College. Prior to completing his degree, he completed a tour in the United States Air Force where he was eventually stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. Mr. Tweedy married his high school sweetheart Elizabeth Ann McDermott Tweedy and moved to Merritt Island, Florida. While in Florida, he completed his business degree at Osceola University. His life long career was contracting range engineering services for the National Aeronautics and Space Agency. Upon his retirement, Mr. Tweedy and his wife moved to Cullowhee North Carolina. In Cullowhee he served as a member of the Cullowhee United Methodist Church, actively participated in the Jackson County Democratic Party and was elected to two terms on the Forrest Hills Town Council. He also was a member of the American Legion and served on several boards.
Mr. Tweedy is survived by his wife Elizabeth and daughters Teresa Tweedy Kravetz and Julie Tweedy Ogletree of Jackson County North Carolina and his son Michael Tweedy of Lynchburg, Virginia. Other surviving family members include Aloyna Tweedy, Billy Ogletree, Dave Kravetz, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. Visitation will begin at 5:00. Graveside Services will be held at Cumbie Cemetery in Rustburg, Va. Friday November 9th at 11:00 am. . In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances are made to Cullowhee United Methodist Church’s Playground Fund, P.O. Box 1267, Cullowhee N.C. 28723.
