Obituary of Evelyn Lavinia Childers

Evelyn Lavinia Bumgarner Childers, age 91 of Salem SC, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 10, 2020.   She was born on September 3, 1929, in Six Mile SC, to the late George “Clarence” and Eliza “Lavinia” Mann Bumgarner.

Although Evelyn was born and passed away in South Carolina, she lived most of her life in Jackson County NC.  She was a member of Charity Baptist Church in Salem.  Evelyn was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, but her true passion was spending time with her loving family.

Evelyn will be dearly missed by her sons, Dennis (LaQueta) Childers, Jimmy Childers, Tommy (Jackie) Childers; daughter, Janice Rathbone; siblings, Dot (Wilson) James, Martha (Joel) Arnold, Walter Bumgarner, Earl (Helen) Bumgarner; daughter-in-law, Margaret Childers; brothers-in-law, Clell (Nellean) Childers, Charlie (Christine) Childers; granddaughters, Karen Harper, Morgan Childers, Freda Childers, Jennifer Templeton; grandsons, Andy Lopatin, Jeffrey Childers, Brian Messick; great grandchildren, JaLisa Harper, Colton Ray Logan, Hadley & Darby Templeton; great great grandchildren, Malakhi and Zade; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Duane Childers; son, David Childers; daughter, Barbara Childers; brother, Bill Bumgarner; granddaughter, Veronica Childers; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Childers.

In keeping with Evelyn’s wishes, cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Appalachian Funeral Services of Sylva.

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, December 19, 2020, at Pine Creek Cemetery, Glenville NC, with Rev. Carl Dockins, officiating.
