Obituary of James Carlton Burrell

James Carlton Burrell, 73, of Sylva went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 20, 2020. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Rev. J.C. and Betty Sue Burrell.

An avid woodsman, he owned his own business, Franklin Lumber and Kiln. A U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam War, he was a member of East Fork Baptist Church. He volunteered for the U.S. Forest Service and was an avid tennis player. Carlton donated his time and financial support to the Jackson County Rescue Squad and the Sylva and Savannah Fire Departments.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Regina Burrell. He lived for his family, his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his family and his Bojangles Group.

Carlton is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sherry Robinson Burrell; two children, James Craig Burrell (Kristie) of Sylva and Jane Carla Deitz (Josh) of Sylva; four grandchildren, Shawna Hipp (Cory), Trevor Burrell (Kimberley), Jessica and Jared Bumgarner. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Kinsleigh, Katum and Brentley; two brothers, Rev. Dennis Burrell (Evelyn) of Sylva and Kenneth Burrell (Lea Ann) of Sylva.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 26th at 1:00 p.m. at East Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell and the Rev. Roger Stewman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
