Mrs. Mopps was my second-grade teacher at Colonial Christian School (later known as South Dade Baptist School) in Florida many years ago. I thought of her for no particular reason today, and when I looked her up on Google, I was saddened to learn that she passed away earlier this year. I would have liked to tell her again how special she was.
She was truly the warmest, most motherly grade school teacher that any child could ever wish for. So much so that I came up with a silly nickname for her. I can't remember if I ever told it to her or kept it a secret, but that nickname was Mommy Mopps because she really did radiate a benevolence befitting a mother. She was patient and fair and loving at all times. Just being in her presence felt safe.
Blessings to Wilbur, Kathy, Leigh, David, and all others who knew and loved her. I knew her for just one school year and I will never forget her.
