I have just found this on the Internet and am so sad. I met him while working for the Macon County School System and enjoyed talking with him about various programs. What a great man and certainly a loss for the western NC community. It is always so sad to lose such an important person and role model...

Dear McConnell Family,
My prayers and sympathy go out to each of you. Charlie was mentioned fondly in my family all of my life. He served as such a positive role model to each of us in the Searcy home. He will be greatly missed. As my love of basketball continues in my adult life, I often think of Charlie and his advice or encouragement he gave me and I try to give that same inspiration to others. May God give each of you in the McConnell family peace during this time of grieving. God Bless you Charlie and you will be missed deeply!!!

Dear Ruth, Kristy, Jeff, Greg, Judy, Gene and Kathy,
We were shocked and saddened to read today in the Sylva newspaper of Charles' passing. Charles was a wonderful husband, father and friend who always had a ready smile and loving chuckle. We know that he will be missed not only by his family and friends but also by the community where he gave himself so freely. Charles was a "true and faithful servant" and is resting eternally in our Father's arms. May God grant you the peace that passes all understanding and soothe your grieving hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

What a remarkable man, he helped so many. I had a need for someone in my community whose house was leaking and floor was falling through and overall in terrible shape. my sister put me in touch with Charlie, Jackson Neighbors in Need. He went with me the next night to check it out and within a week he had the materials there to begin the work. Without his help and dedication to his cause this would have never been possible. I am sure that he is wearing a crown with many jewels. This world could certainly use alot more Charlie McConnell's in it. He will be missed. Love and peace to the family in this time of great loss.

Ruth, Gene, Greg, Jeff and Kristy:my prayers are with you at the loss of Charlie. I got to know Charlie well while at WWIT radio in Canton. While Charlie and a friend served as chaperones during a Tuscola band-parent trip, they recorded on cassette tape the song 'Unchained Melody' by the Righteous Brothers. A mutual friend got a copy of the tape to me and we promoted it and built it up big time and then played it on the radio. It sounded like a couple of tom-cats with their tail caught by a rocking chair. From that day forward Charlie laughed about that every time I saw him, which was often.Everyone who knew him had a 'Charlie' story. Charlie was larger than life for those of us blessed to know him and all of us in the Catamount Nation will miss him greatly. Charlie made life better for all of us who knew him with his large laugh and his sunny attitude. We love you Charlie.

I had the most wonderful blessing (and great challenge) to teach both Garrison & Gavin when they were 4 years old. I enjoyed many many larger than life stories about "Pops" and it was clear....he was their Super hero. When the boys would come back from the mountains I could always expect big tales & fun stories....I had the opportunity to meet Nana & Pops.....and every wonderful thing they had told me was true. Pops was a larger than life super hero. He had a light in him that shined so bright. He left happy tracks every where he went. When Kristy would tell me that Nana & Pops were coming I'd be almost as excited as the boys when they came just to get to visit with them. What a very special family. You are ALL in our prayers. Ruth and the rest of the McConnell family, Bea and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend Charlie. I first met Charlie when we were public school superintendents. As the years passed he became a wonderful mentor and close friend to me. He always had time to impart a word of "wisdom" to this southeastern North Carolina "flat lander" educator; and I will always cherish his wit, quick mind, compassion and charity for others. More importantly, all of us should be comforted today knowing he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ---his testimony was consistent and his behavior was always a reaffirmation of that testimony. Ruth and Family, I was saddened to hear of Coach McConnell's passing. I was fortunate to have been a student in his first class, as he was my fifth grade teacher at Cullowhee, and then again, in seventh grade. During our last conversation I told him of projects we did in those years that I remember to this day, and how I looked forward to each day in his classroom. He has always been a larger than life character in my memories. He is why I became an educator. Coach McConnell was so special in so many ways, and to so many people. I think of all the children, teachers, and the people of Jackson County who have felt his influence, and been touched by his life. I am one of those people, and I find it difficult to describe how much he has meant to me. His heart was always with young people, and I loved hearing his stories in recent years, of his love of continuing his work with youth. He was such a person of integrity and conviction, who, throughout his life never lost focus of who he was. What a rare thing that is, to always remain true to yourself. What will we do without that strong, contagious personality? He lived life to the fullest and we were all so much better for having him in ours.

I had the distinct pleasure of being interviewed by Mr. McConnell for a job during the summer after I had completed by student teaching. I only remember one question that I was ever asked during an interview and that was the one that Mr. McConnell asked me. That question was, "IF I were a bird perched in your room for a day what would I see from you regarding discipline?" Well, he is with the greatest and highest of birds now and I hope is seeing the things that he always hoped for and needed.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers during this time.
Sincerely,
Connie Allen

Ruth, Gene, Judy and the rest of the McConnell family. I was saddened this morning when a friend called and told me of Charlie’s death. He was always a special person to me as he was a friend and an excellent boss. I felt that he always respected me and I certainly respected and admired him. He always tried to keep me pointed in the right direction. Charlie was a dedicated educator and administrator and always had the best interest of the school system at heart and he always worked tirelessly to make us better in all that we did. He was a good man and he will be missed. I feel that I am a better person for knowing him and will always remember him and hope as I grow older that I can be as fine a person as he was. God bless the McConnell family as they go through this difficult time and may they receive comfort in knowing that Charlie was a positive influence on this community. Larry and Kandy Tucker
