Obituary of Florence Bishop

Florence Ammons Bishop entered eternal rest in Jesus’s arms on April 7, 2013. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Richard and the late Ruth Henry Ammons. She was a member of Promise Land Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Gudger Bishop; two sons, Grady and George Bishop; four brothers and three sisters. Florence is survived by two daughters, Patsy Dills (Dan) of Cullowhee and Betty Sims (Willis) of Asheville; six grandchildren, Don Sims (Jenni) of Asheville, Donna Willis (Bobby) of Arden, Rita and David Dills, both of Cullowhee; Eddie and Benny Bishop, both of Forks, WA; three great grandchildren, Amanda McLaughlin (Christopher), Joshua Sims, Brandon Willis; two brothers, Ernest and RV Ammons; and two sisters, Alice Aikens and Kate Bishop. Florence lived by her faith in God and that was evident in her everyday life. One of her key Bible references is 1 Corinthians 13: 12-13, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” Florence demonstrated all three of these daily but her charity was the greatest of these. She touched many lives and was a mentor for many. The family wants to express our gratitude for all the love and prayers during our time of grieving. A funeral service will be held at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Steve Webb officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is established at Broyhill Children’s Home, 111 Sneed Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
