Fifty years ago, Coach Howell took a ragtag group of high school boys and coached us to the first and only undefeated season. He did this by building a team that is still bonded by what he did that season. Whenever we get together we still talked about what he was able to help us accomplish. The lessons that the taught us
and the life lessons learned from him has served all of us very well since that year. Although I only saw Coach Howell a few times since then I have often told people about what a special man he was. The last time I saw him I ask him how did it feel to have had such a positive impact on the lives of so many young people. In his own humble way he expressed that he got more from them than they will ever know. May God bless you and provide you and your family comfort during this time of sorrow.

Coach Howell, you meant more to my life than words can express. You taught me what was possible and to accept does less from myself than the best. I understood you so well and you made me want to be a better person and man. So many of the lives you touched didn't realize what you did for them until later in their lives, thankfully I did and always well. You were the major factor of a community that came together in the '60s & '70s when the rest of the world had problems we did not. Only those would played for you can understand what you meant to a school & community. You deserve all the love and success you received. Thank you for touching my life and family.

Martha, family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. Coach was central to the lives of so many families in the Sylva-Webster-Cullowhee area for so many years. While he has been missed on the football field and in the Jackson County communities, he will forever be in our memories.

I have lost a hero. It was an honor the first and every time I coached against Babe. I have awesome memories and great conversations to hang on to. If you met him then you will always have a Babe story to tell. I wish I could be there Saturday but I know Babe would expect me to be coaching at the track regionals like I am supposed to be. I am thinking of you and your family Peggy and all the Mabrys.

It has been our pleasure in years past to work with Coach Howell in getting pictures made for his teams. He was always kind and greeted us so both on and off the field. We are so sorry for your loss.
