Obituary of Inez Smith
Inez Monteith Smith, 84, formerly of Sylva, NC, died Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Eden Terrace Assisted Living in Spartanburg, SC.
A native of Swain County, Inez lived most of her adult life in Jackson County, and was a daughter of the late Samuel Gordon and Martha Cable Monteith. She was a member of Sylva First Baptist Church where she served as a Deacon, co-chaired the Christmas Bazaar multiple times, and worked on the “Together We Grow” campaign. She was on the Board of Directors of the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame. A member of the Lions Club, Inez received the Jack Stickley Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services from the North Carolina Lions Foundation. She was retired from Southwestern Community College.
Inez was an active and dedicated community volunteer. She loved her family and her church. She enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables and putting them all to good use. Family gatherings and decorating for the Christmas holidays were special occasions that she cherished. The many friendships made in her lifetime were dear to her and she was loved by many.
Inez was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, William (Bill) Smith; brothers Olin Monteith, Roger Monteith, Harold (Red) Monteith and sister Willa Rae Stanberry. Surviving are two sons, Ron Smith and wife, Caroline, of Spartanburg, SC and Ty Smith and wife, Dorla, of Charlottesville, VA; sister Jo Moon and husband Hugh of Sylva, NC; sister-in-laws Hazel Monteith of Sylva, NC and Frankie Monteith of Brevard, NC; brother-in-law Bill Stanberry of Boone, NC; four grandchildren Deidre Smith, Mary Caroline Smith, Matthew Smith and Bow Smith; and a special caregiver, Rhonda Smith.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Sylva First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Mathis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
