Obituary of Thomas Richard Monteith
Thomas Richard Monteith, 88, of Cashiers passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at the John Keever Solace Center in Asheville, NC. Thomas was born September 19, 1925 in Jackson County. He is the son of the late Thomas and Elzie ( Wilson) Monteith .He was preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years Mattie B. Riley Monteith and four sisters Ada Hooper, Lucille Devern, Thelma Smith and Melba Dillard.
He served in the US Navy during WWII. He was the former owner and operator of the Shell service station and the Texaco service station in Cashiers. He was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife 38 years Katherine (Corbin) Monteith three daughters Patricia Drummond, Myra Bumgarner and Lisa Monteith and two sons Rick and Phil Monteith. Four stepdaughters; Judith Hollis, Freida Jones, Kathy Quimby and Frankie Smith. Thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren and five step grandchildren and twelve step great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held2:00 PM Saturday November 9, 2013 in the Cashiers United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Ashe, Steve Kerhoulas and Nathan Bumgarner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday November 8, 2013 at the Church. Burial will be in the Upper Zachary Cemetery with Military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Jerry Jones, Tom McCullogh, Robert Quimby, Jeremy Babb, Bill Wood, Brian Monteith Pierce Drummond, Nathan Bumgarner, Derick Monteith, Marshall Dawson and Alan Dawson.
