I met Syrilda shortly after we arrived in Cullowhee when my husband Gerry got a job at WCU history department. She helped me understand the community, its races, its ethnic groups, its schools, its divisions and strengths. She was a truly remarkable woman who saw the good in everyone. Hers was a life well lived on the highest level.

I remember meeting and talking with Syrilda in the 1970's. We moved here in December 1968 and were so glad to be in this mountain community... but it did take a bit of getting used to. We live since 1972 in Weyehutta, Cullowhee, and Syrilda helped me understand all the different people who lived here: native Americans,Scotch-Irish, Black and all she celebrated as part of her heritage. She made me feel that way too. And I send my thoughts to her survivors and want them to know she was a wonderful and resourceful person. She was one of the first people I ever met here. I was lucky. Sincerely, Molly Schwartz

Mrs. Syrilda, you were always a smiling and welcoming lady. Beautiful and witty. You will be missed. Glad to know though, that we will greet each other again as we walk upon the streets of gold!
