Kathy and family,
So sorry to hear of Uncle Jimmy's passing. I will always remember coming into the kitchen every morning as I got ready for school. the radio was always on and Uncle Jimmy was telling us to get a move on because it was "getting up time". What a legacy he leaves! I am so thankful for all he did for the people of Jackson County. My thoughts are with all of you.

I have so many wonderful memories of this great man. He always made me feel welcome in his home and treated me like family. He has left a lasting impression on Western North Carolina that will likely never be matched. "Uncle Jimmy" was truly one of a kind.
My heart goes out to all the family.

I remember the first time I met Uncle Jimmy. I was doing sales in Sylva that day for WBHN when the owner of an antique store told me to just wait, that Uncle Jimmy would be in about this time. Sure enough, he came walking through the door, larger than life. He had an air about him that demanded respect, but at the same time he seemed so easy going. Sales is not an easy job in any industry, but Uncle Jimmy encouraged me to keep at it and to stay in radio broadcasting. I ran into him again when I worked for WRGC and it always seemed to be a highlight for all of the staff when he came by. It was for me because I would get to overhear the great radio stories. If I aspire to be half as professional and dedicated as Uncle Jimmy was, I believe I'll be alright. He was an inspiration to me and will be missed by many. A great loss to the community. My prayers are with the family during this time of monumental loss.

Jimmy Childress, what a great gentleman, a wonderful human being! Worked for Jimmy 1960-68 at WKSK, his station in West Jefferson. Learned so much from him about community service and caring. Jimmy contributed much to so many in so many ways. To his family, God's peace and blesings! J. Ardell & Remelle Sink.

I began working for WRGC in 1986 at age 14 and that was my first interaction with Uncle Jimmy. My first memories were being very afraid of him because when he spoke he meant business. During my time at WRGC I met a lot of great announcers and people. Either directly or indirectly his influence made last impressions on us and molded us to who we are, for the better, for the richer, maybe not monetarily.
Most people will remember James Bryant Childress as the corny old man who whistled with songs, doing ad lib ads for business, and went about a radio program like someone listening to music at home. Most of us announcers aspired to be great journalists, announcers, and business leaders in media thinking this was not the way it was done in the real world. In every way, all of us who worked for him have come back to Uncle Jimmy’s formula of being a true part of the community and letting it reflect in our work. It has made all the difference in our success.
What is most impressive about Uncle Jimmy is he met his physical challenges, poverty, and the prejudices associated with being poor and, then, handicapped and changed the world around him. He brought radio and electronic media to western North Carolina communities like Waynesville, Murphy, and Sylva. He gave many of us our first job. The first radio station in Sylva was donated to a family who lost their home. He promoted economic development and worked to protect natural resources. Sometimes he did the right thing at the cost of business. I believe most people born in the conditions as Uncle Jimmy would have only seen limitations. I am thankful he had visions of opportunity and sought them out.
If you were fortunate to meet and talk to Uncle Jimmy he could tell you all about life and then he would be gone. But, if you really wanted anything more than that, he was glad to help you in any way he could or give you advise. It only costs you time . . . and a cigarette.

Mr. Childress voice was one of the first sounds I remember growing up as my mom would have the radio on as I played in the floor of our home. He wit and wisdom were a great day starter for all of Jackson. His mountain radio empire was a boom to the economy of WNC and launched many careers of local men and women for over 50 years. I count myself fortunate to have known and worked for him. He was a blessing to me, to Jackson County and to WNC. May we meet again in heaven, dear friend.
