Lord, please "Bless" and "Be With" the West Family at this time. After being with the Lord a few days now, I am sure Jerry has seen many things we can not imagine in Glory. He has left a void in the family, that one day, will be once again complete, when we who trust in the Lord, all sit down by the River. God Bless Carolyn and the children. Tim

I met Jerry many years ago while I was a graduate student at NC State, never imagining that someday we would be working at the same university. Jerry was very well respected by his coworkers and was one of the nicest fellows I've ever gotten to know. He cared about his work, he cared about his colleagues, and he cared about his students. He'll be greatly missed.

Dr. West and I shared much of our early careers together. We were student trainees with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission together, we roomed together when we worked on our MS degrees at NC State and we stayed in contact with each other during our early career years. We also shared each other's homes during our early married years and were in each other's weddings. I always considered him a dear friend who helped me grow in many ways. Our paths seperated during the 1990's and we lost touch with each other. His untimely death is a deep loss. Our prayers are with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Carolyn and family,
I met Jerry shortly after I arrived at NC State 25 years ago, and had the good fortune to interact with him many times throughout my professional fisheries career. I want you to know that Jerry was universally respected by his colleagues in the fisheries profession as an excellent biologist, teacher, mentor and fisheries professional, as well as simply an honest, straightforward, wonderful person. We are all going to miss him.

There are no words that express the pain I feel for your family with this sudden, unexpected change of Jerry's residence. Hard to imagine the joy he is experiencing at the same time our hearts ache.
In reading Isaiah 60:19-22 I get a glimpse of the perfection of God's work through Jerry's faithfulness:
19 The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.
21 Then all your people will be righteous and they will possess the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor.
22 The least of you will become a thousand, the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the LORD; in its time I will do this swiftly.
And swiftly it was done. Now we will honor Jerry with the way we live our lives and continue the work he was so faithful to begin for God's glory. Love you all, Jana

Carolyn, Anita, Keith and Family,
I was profoundly sorry to hear that Dr. West had passed. I will always count it a great blessing that he was my mentor and adviser while I was in graduate school. It is easy to find an adviser for graduate school, but it is not easy to find a mentor. He not only directed my studies and research but he lived a life that was an example to me of how to me a man, husband and father. He is one of the greatest men I have know on my journey through life and one of the richest. His great wealth was in the things that mattered - faith, hope and love. Because he was rich in these, he was also rich in relationships. I will always be thankful to God that I had one of these with him.
Have Hope - He is Risen,
Micky

Dear West family - I just learned of your loss today and wanted to offer my deepest condolences. Dr. West was my professor for several grad classes at WCU - it was obvious he really loved sharing his knowledge of science with others, but more importantly, his compassion for others was so evident, and so many students have been blessed to know him and to learn from him. May it comfort you knowing that God keeps his promises - He's prepared a place for us, and so our life on this Earth is just one chapter! Oh, the wonderful things He must have in store for His children! Sincerely, Kelly

Dr West was my mentor and good friend during my college days at WCU from 1973 to 1978. He was a huge influence on my life, and helped me forge a career first as a wildlife biologist in Illinois, and an analytical chemist with Abbott Laboratories. I am still with them after 31 years. I am saddened to hear this news, but thankful to have been his student, and to acknowledge that his teaching made my life work. I owe him a debt of gratitude. It always pleased me when I could return to WCU, to be able to visit with him and share moments. MY condolences to Dr.West's family along with prayers. God bless you Dr. West for instilling in me a love of nature, and an appreciate for the science of life.
