Obituary of Albert James Smith

Leicester, NC Albert James Smith age 84, passed away on October 28, 2014 at Care Partner Hospice. A native of Swain County was the son of the late Floyd Smith and Fannie Greene. He was a 1948 graduate of Swain County High School, a Sergeant in the US Army and a Veteran of the Korean War. He was awarded the honor of Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service. He started Southern Tile and Marble in 1958 and successfully operated that business until 2005. He touched many lives both professionally and personally with his irrepressible smile and love of life. In 1954 he married Mary B Mason who preceded him in death in 1981. He is survived by his children; Ronnie Smith of Leicester Sara Smith Ring and husband Taft of Flag Pond, TN, Carol Smith Williams and husband Kenneth of Hendersonville, David Smith of Leicester, Rob Smith and wife Beth of Waxhaw and one Brother Boyd Smith and wife Gloria of Brevard and his 10 grandchildren; Matthew, Jeremiah, Christopher, Emily, Jordan, Rachel, Mason, Jordan, Caroline and Braden as well as his five Great-Grandchildren. He is also survived by his many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws, extended family and friends. The family will receive friends at Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva, NC, Saturday November 1 from 12:00 until 2:00 PM and a Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately following in the Chapel with Rev. Billy H. Ring officiating. Interment will be held at a later date for immediate family at Arlington National Cemetery.
