Obituary of Phyllis Gertrude Hulbert

Phyllis Johnson Hulbert, 84, of Sylva, NC, passed gently at her home on July 28, 2015, after years of fighting a brave battle against leukemia. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Bernice Johnson of Manchester, CT and was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Carol Hulbert-Foster. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ellerd Hulbert; three daughters, Dianne Wilcox, Laurie Hulbert and Cathy Hulbert Simpson; and four grandchildren, Victor Wilcox, Jennifer Wilcox, Spencer Simpson and Paige Simpson. Ellerd and Phyllis raised their children in a variety of places starting in Tachikowa, Japan, where their first daughter was born. The family subsequently lived in East Haven, CT, Parkville, MO, Nansemond Co., VA and finally in Cullowhee/Sylva NC from 1970 to date. Phyllis had the pleasure of bringing life and beauty into the Sylva community for over two decades through the flowers and other plants she grew and nurtured as co-owner and operator of Twin Brooks Nursery in Sylva, NC. A celebration of her amazing life and spirit will be held on Friday, July 31 at 1 pm at St. David's Episcopal Church in Cullowhee, NC. A visitation with family will be held at the church after the service. Arrangements are being handled by Appalachian Funeral Services.
