Mrs. Coward was one of my favorite teachers, both in junior high and then my senior year, as my English teacher. Because of her love for Appalachian folklore, she assigned us all to interview local people, so thanks to her I have my Granny and Papaw on a (very old!) audiotape telling the stories of their lives in NC.....sort of a precursor to NPR's Storycorps. And she let me read the part of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion in class, which was lots of fun. Thank you, Mrs. Coward, for inspiring me to love stories and literature!

I have known two master teachers in my life. Nancy Coward was one of them! I don't think we will ever know the magnitude of influence she had upon her students; I believe even she would be surprised! I knew her as a dedicated servant in our church, a gracious and charming hostess, a woman proud of her roots in the soil of these mountains, and a fellow lover of good novels! God blessed her with unique talents. A part of her spirit will live on in so many.

Mrs. Coward's legacy will live on in each of those who were privileged to study with her. I graduated from CHS in 1979 will never forget her inspiring classes. Her appreciation of the Appalachian culture had a big influence on me--and I still perform Appalachian folk songs at many of my concerts.
My thoughts are with you and those who will so miss having her light among us.
Sincerely,
Myra Vassian

Words cannot really express the impact Ms. Coward had on all those she taught and those that worked with her. I am in touch with many former students of Ms. Coward and I can say that I have only heard praises about her as a teacher, mentor, and a great role model. She was truly one of a kind and I consider myself a better person from having known her and working with her. RIP Ms. Coward.

I can't believe that Nancy has died. She was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Nancy was honest and had an abundance of integrity. When I first started at First Baptist she would proof the bulletin and newsletter for me. After she broke up housekeeping I was given some of her household items. Every time I use one of those items I think of her. Sometimes she would just call the church office and talk with me. I am so sorry that I didn't see her one more time.

Mrs. Coward was my English teacher in 1958-9 and she has remained not only my favorite teacher but a major influence in my life ever since. She gave me encouragement and guidance that steered me toward becoming an English teacher as well. Just as important as the knowledge she imparted was the gentle nature and gracious good humor she always exhibited in her classroom, as well as her continued friendliness and inspiration over the years. When we would meet from time to time, she always had a smile and a reminiscence to share, and most times a recommendation for a book that she liked or thought that I'd find of interest. Mrs. Coward was -- and for me, still is --the very embodiment of the ideal inspiring Teacher and an incomparable lady in every sense of the word. I shall forever be thankful to have known her.

Nancy was one of my high school English teachers. No other teacher, in any grade or level, influenced me more profoundly that her. I remember the books we were required to read, the methods of critical thinking she taught, the vocabulary words she made us memorize but, most importantly, I remember her way of showing she cared for others.
I as amazed how, years after graduating from high school and leaving Cullowhee, she still rememberd me and treated our meeting as if we had just seen each other the previous week.
I have many friends from my past who have the same types of stories, and honor her role in shaping us to be good, responsible people.
I am better for having known Nancy.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Mrs.Coward. To say that she is beloved by every kid she ever taught is probably an understatement. What a wonderful, funny, inspiring person. She believed in me when I definitely did not believe in myself. I have a cookbook of her grandmother's recipes that she gave me when I got married. She said "kissing don't last, cooking do." I still have it and I still use it. I was fortunate to be able to see her occasionally over the years since I graduated from CHS and she was always positive and encouraging. A light has gone out in the world.
