Obituary of Velma Naomi Fisher

Velma Naomi Fisher, age 89, of Sylva died Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Morning Star Assisted Living. Velma was born March 18, 1927 in Sylva. She is the daughter of the late Ervin and the late Bertie (Green) Pannell. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Jim Cunningham and Grover Fisher; brothers, Paul and Blaine Pannell; and sisters Ethel Mull and Faye Cogdill. Velma worked as a cook for the Job Corps in Cherokee; she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, Head Start, and the Community Table. She was a member of Buff Creek Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors, bird watching, traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughter Robin (Bruce) Parris; two granddaughters, Heather (Steven) Broom and Mandy (Matt Nicholson) Parris; two great granddaughters, Madison and Payton; and two sisters, Katie Burrell of Sylva, and Jean Dalton of Alabama. The funeral will be held 2:00 pm on Monday, April 18 at Appalachian Funeral Services, Sylva, NC with Rev. Lloyd Fish, and Rev. Gerald Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Addie Cemetery, Sylva. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Community Table, 23 Central Street, Sylva, NC. .
