Deborah and I are so sorry to hear of Orville's passing. He was truly a special man and a good friend. While he is a legendary North Carolinian, it was his personal warmth, caring, love of his family, and his enduring friendships that were most important. Deborah and I think of him--and you--often and we miss you. He was one of the great men that you happen to have a chance to meet in life and our lives have both been enriched because of him.
Nancy and family, we wish you peace and send our affection.
Best Regards,
John Bardo

Please add my condolences to what I am sure is a long list of those that honor Orville.
I first met Orville when I moved to Sylva in 1986 as a young lawyer just out of the Navy. Orville was one of the "older lawyers" of the bar (back when I foolishly thought 60 was old) and part of the bedrock of the larger Jackson County community. His passing is part of a generational tsunami in our county--the loss of a group of impressive men and women that guided and led our community and region successfully into the 21st century. Orville was a huge part of that cohort and his public and private leadership will be greatly missed. On a personal note, I always found Orville to be a true gentleman in the broadest sense of that word and that, I think, will be his greatest memorial. God bless you and keep you all.

Was so sad to hear about Orville. Certainly remember talking with him when I worked across the street at Holt & Haire, and seeing him at the Lyons Den - Book Store. He was so nice and always had some intelligent statement/story to tell. And, I know you all must have wonderful memories and stories of him to share during this difficult time and forever.

Orville was a very special friend to my children as well as to me. He always had a smile when he talked with us and was very positive and encouraging to my children. He used to walk around the neighborhood or to work and would stop to chat if any of us were outside.Like Mary Jane, he always made us feel special. I particularly enjoyed being with him and Nancy recently when we had our pictures made. As usual, he had a few wise and witty remarks about posing and expressions. Even in his later days he made a special effort to attend church and to participate in life as much as he was able. He will always hold a special place in my memories.
Sending love and prayers of comfort to all his family- Mary Anne
