Obituary of Jimmie Sutton
Jimmie Tucker Sutton, age 102, went to live her Heavenly Father Thursday February 2, 2012 after a period of declining health. She was preceded in death by her first husband Robert Guy Sutton and her second husband Frank Colvard. She was born November 4, 1909 in Maggie Valley to the late Rev. John Milas and Hattie Moody Tucker. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Neal, Wilford, Ned and Jennings Tucker and three sisters, Ruby Holden, Thelma Evans and Moqueta Crawford. She is survived by a sister-in-laws Opal Tucker, Mary Knight and Wanda Sutton, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jimmie has a big adopted family the residence and staff of Morning Assisted Living, who have done a wonderful job taking care of her for the past 7 years.
Jimmie believed in education and encouraged and helped many to further their education. She went to Cullowhee Normal Industrial School (now known as Western Carolina University), and graduated with a 2 year teaching degree in 1930. When WCU grew to a four year college, she went back to school and received her 4 year education degree in 1949. She then Graduated with her master's degree in 1963. She always said 'I grew with the college." She started her teaching career in a one room school house on Cane Creek in Jackson County. She taught at schools in Franklin, Highlands, and Robbinsville, and retired from Hazelwood Elementary School. She continued taking classes all through the years into her 90's- needlepoint, sewing, knitting, ceramics etc.
Most importantly, Jimmie loved God and her church, Ochre Hill Baptist Church. She taught the Senior Adult Women Sunday School Class until she went to live in the assisted living facility. She served in many capacities and especially the WMU. She had a heart for and supported missions.
Services will be held at 2:00PM Saturday February 4, 2012 in the Ochre Hill Baptist Church of which she was the oldest member the Rev. Earl Holden, Johnny Norris, and J.D. Grant will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
