Obituary of George Alan Yates

George Alan Yates, 65, of Cullowhee, NC, passed away on Tuesday, September 19th, 2017 at his home. George was born in South Georgia to Winford and Ruth Yates on February 9th, 1952. He received a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition from the University of West Georgia and later received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a high school band director and held various other occupations throughout the years. He enjoyed fishing, wood working in his woodshop on Caney Fork, making pottery, gardening, and taking care of his animals. He was also involved at Cullowhee United Methodist Church where he directed the hand bell choir for 12 years. George is survived by his sons, Sam Yates of Carrollton, GA and Thomas Yates of Atlanta, GA, his brother James Yates of Douglasville, GA, and his sister Brenda Evans of Auburn, AL. A memorial service will be held at Cullowhee United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 23rd at 11:00am with the Reverends David Reeves and Julia Trantham officiating. Visitation will be held following the service.
