I was a student at Cullowhee from 1960 to 1964. When I think of my high school years at Camp Laboratory School, Mr Flake, always comes into my memories as a very vital part of the school and all the extra curricular actives. I had four years of math classes all taught by him. He had an excellent understanding of higher math levels and was able to share this knowledge with his students. He sponsored club activities, sold tickets at ballgames, sponsored Student Council and Student Council dances and was Senior Class Sponsor for the Class of 1964. He was a chaperone for our Senior Trip to Washington, DC, and New York City which took a lot of courage to be responsible for our class. He did all of this for us in a very loving positive manner. I feel very fortunate to have known and had him as part of my high school years. To his family you can be so proud of who he was and know he has a Heavenly Home.

My dear, precious Uncle Jesse,
You know how much I love you. I can feel your presence as I write these words. I know the angels are rejoicing while I am grieving. You will forever live in my heart until I see you again. Sadly, my health will not permit me to travel the distance to attend your service, but I will be there in spirit.

I transferred to Cullowhee in my senior year. Mr. Flake was home room and my math teacher....patient as as saint. Plus he was encouraging in my dream to be a stage manager. God bless him and may he rest in peace...a special man and a walking angel.

Jesse's life is described in the great poem, A Parable of Life, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, particularly the verse that reads as follows:
Lives of great men all remind us,
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us,
Footprints on the sands of time.
From all the condolences that have been shared, it is obvious that Jesse left footprints in the lives of many people. He now has received his "Welcome home, my good and faithful servant" from our Lord.

Mr. Flake may have been small in physical stature, but was a “very big person” as regards to practicing loving principles along with his talents, and was brilliant in his own right.
He was my high school math teacher (a very good one) and always tried to be positive/supportive of students and others. He possessed much humility as he was respectful and kind to everyone as far as I could tell, having a good sense of humor about our humanity, and about himself.
I feel very fortunate to have known him.
May family and friends know that my thoughts are with you during your periods of grieving and as you celebrate his life.

My deepest condolences to your family. Jesse was a gentle, kind man, such a good neighbor. He seemed to have a special relationship with my dog, Ranger, the silver poodle, who was almost as tall as Jesse. Jesse always welcomed Ranger up on his porch and petted him, which made Ranger very happy. Jesse will be missed.

From my Dad, Luther Osment: "Jesse spent his whole life entering into one helpful cause after another. And everything he was a part of was made better because of his involvement. You could always count on Jesse to be where he was supposed to be, when he was supposed to be there, prepared to do what he was supposed to be doing."

Jesse was SO wonderful to me during my time as the Head Volleyball Coach at WCU. He was always incredibly full of joy and spread happiness everywhere he went. He always took the time to support me, my staff and my teams. Jesse had a heart of God and everyone who knew him could see it. I can't picture Jesse without his big smile and his laughter. I'm so sorry for the entire community for this loss. He was such an angel here on earth and now will be God's angel up in heaven. <3 Much love and prayers for his family.
Sincerely,
Michelle

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of one of my favorite Cullowhee High School teachers. He taught me Algebra and he also taught me in Drivers Education. I passed up Geometry to take Driver Ed. - should have worked it in somehow as I needed it in my job later with the Timken Tapered Roller Bearing Co. Mr. Flake was well liked and dedicated to teaching.
May you Rest In Peace.

I'm so sorry to hear of Jesse's passing. There are so few genuinely kind people in this world, and he was certainly one of them. I remember him coming to visit me in the hospital when I was 5 after I'd had my tonsils out, he gave me my first paying job when I was 14 (he let me inventory his flower shop over a 3 day weekend). Every Halloween I remember weaving through the kitty cats on his porch to go in and pick some candy off his meticulously arranged television tray (he loved kids coming at Halloween). When I was small I used to call him "Uncle Jesse"...and I really wish I'd never stopped.
At Christmas, Jesse would read "Conrad the Cobbler" and narrate the Christmas plays. He opened his flower shop doors after hours when I was in the 3rd grade so my parents could buy me flowers when I was in my school's production of the Wizard of Oz. He would sign birthday cards with that perfect, tiny block print of his. He was there for my high school graduation.
One of my favorite memories of Jesse, though, was when I was in the 7th grade. He ran the flower shop on WCU's campus at the time, and for Valentine's Day he noticed that other girls in my class were receiving deliveries of flowers from friends and from their parents...he sent me a single white rose. It was one of the simplest, nicest things I'd ever heard of. Jesse never boasted or looked for thanks or recognition, but he was one of the kindest and most giving people I've ever met.
He was one of those constant, loving presences that you tend to take for granted when you are a child, then look back at with thanks when you're an adult. I'm sorry, Betty Jean and family, for your loss, but know that Jesse still shines bright in the joyful memories he brought to everyone during his extraordinary time here on earth. He will be sorely missed.

He was such a joy to be with and share memories. He was definitely one of a kind. He showed so much love and compassion. May he rest in peace in our heavenly home. Until we meet again "Uncle Buddy".
