Thinking of you at this time. I only knew him as Gene’s younger brother. He apparently contributed significantly to our home town. Rest In Peace Darrell.
Gene, praying for your peace as you remember the good times.

I've known Darrell and the Woodard family all of my life. He had a big heart and a big smile. One year when Brad and I were little, our parents took us to the Sylva Christmas Parade. When the Savannah Fire Truck came by in line there was Darrell on the back of the fire truck. When he saw us he asked if we wanted to ride with them thru the rest of the parade. We both immediately said yes and got on the top of the truck. We were so excited! This is a special childhood memory I have and it was all made possible by a hero named, Darrell Woodard. Thoughts and prayers.

I first met Darrell in 1998 when I started working the gas station at High Country. When I saw the fire chief plate on the front of his truck, I immediately respected him for what he did. After he stopped in a couple more times and I got to have some conversations with him, I was able to respect him for who he was. I always looked forward to him stopping by, he always had a smile and knew everybody there. I was in a rough patch of life at the time and he knew it. He didn't have to talk about directly, though sometimes we did, he had his own special way of checking on me just by having normal conversation and finishing with an encouraging word. When I met my future wife, Karie, he was an enthusiastic supporter. A few years later Leigh started working at High Country. Darrell had become a widower, I tried to be an encouragement to him as he had been to me earlier but don't know how successful I was. After some time Leigh and Darrell became interested in each other. Leigh asked me one day what I thought about "that guy Darrell'. I told her he was one of the finest men in the community and if she was considering dating him she could do no better. What she didn't know was during the same time, Darrell was asking me about her! I told him I'd pray for him and he was on his own, then couldn't contain my laughter. His stops at the station became longer and more frequent. It was so much fun to watch their happiness grow into love and marriage. They were always such a blessing to me and my family, through tragedies and triumphs they were always quick with thoughts and gifts of love. Everything Darrell did was based in love, to Christ, to family, the department, and the community. He wasn't one of the good guys, he was one of the best guys.

On behalf of Western Carolina Communications and myself we are sure going to miss Darrell dropping by the shop. We could always count on a good joke or "jab" from him. Darrell was more than a customer to us he was a good friend and honestly felt more like family. Rest easy 701

Darrell was a wonderful friend and colleague. It was always a pleasure to get to work with him, whether through his fire department or helping others. Always quick on his feet with a comment, Darrell always kept us laughing. I’ll miss you, my friend. Rest easy, and God Bless.
