Obituary of William Edward Hendry

William Edward Hendry, 102, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, March 30th at Maggie Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Home. Mr. Hendry was born on June 29, 1913. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 80 years, Althea Hendry, one son Derald Hendry, and eight siblings. Edward was the last member of the proud pioneer family who were the first settlers of the Fort Myers, Florida area. He was the great-grandson of the man known as the "Father of Fort Myers" after whom Hendry County is named, Captain Francis Asbury Hendry. Mr. Hendry is survived by daughters; Jean (James) Wood and Karen (Jerry) Hughes; grandchildren, Tammy Ott and family, Cindy Williamson and family, Ben Riddling and family, Christina Hughes and family, Jamie Wood and family, Cheryl Hopkins and family; fourteen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. Edward spent many years residing in the Fort Myers area, then moving to Maggie Valley where he donated much of his time after retirement to being recognized for his contributions to the Maggie Valley community. He then moved to Cullowhee to enjoy his gardening with family and friends. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2nd at Wike Cemetery in Cullowhee .
